During the year 1997 to 2002, when U.S witnessed a major drawback in the wheat and barley farming due to the spread of Fusarium Head Blight or Scab, a disease in those crops, an organization named U.S Wheat and Barley Scab Initiative was formed to fight back the problem. The U.S. Wheat & Barley Scab Initiative (USWBSI) is now soliciting research pre-proposals for fiscal year 2020-21. The FY20-21 Request for Project Pre-Proposals (RFP) application materials are posted on the USWBSI’s Website at https://scabusa.org/research_rfp-fy20-21. Sumai 3, a popular resistance source from China, has been well characterized for scab resistance QTL. Fujian 5114, a Chinese wheat derived from the cross Longxi18/Ning8017, has resistance to FHB spread (Type II) as good as Sumai 3, and appears to differ from Sumai 3 in some resistance loci. Under the initiative, farmers and scientists work together to combat scab—also known as Fusarium head blight—one of the most devastating wheat and barley diseases worldwide. Currently, there are only a few wheat and barley varieties with effective levels of resistance to scab.

In the U.S., following a severe outbreak in 1996, Michigan State University’s Rick Ward provided leadership for the creation of a nation-wide effort called the U.S. Wheat and Barley Scab Initiative. While there continues to be no complete cure, collaborating U.S. researchers have developed management practices and breeding lines that can significantly reduce losses to the disease.
